Question

Recently, I often get some warnings of network problem, says “Failed to connect to the internet. System default gateway “Virtual Switch 3” and all adapters failed to connect to the internet after checking NCSI.”

NSCI stands for “Network Connectivity Status Indicator”, it’s a periodical process to check network status according to official website.

The QTS Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) periodically performs tests to check the speed and status of NAS network connections.

And according to another official website, the default behavior is to ping ncsi.qnap.com on the wan port. Whereas, you can change it to ping the default gateway or some customized address.

But it’s out-of-date, since QTS update to 5.0.

Solutions

Since you can not guarantee the remote site is reachable or not, and you can not customize the remote address either. And these annoying messages keep showing up on your logs. You can disable this function on “Network & Virtual Switch”.

Step 1. Open “Network & Virtual Switch”

Step 2. Click to “Network->Interface->System Default Gateway”

Step 3. Check “Disable the NCSI”

  1. This article has lots of activity for some years now, where not only is this, above mentioned, fix is not working but QNAP appears to be dragging their feet with a fix for what appears to now be a two part problem, where the service misreports and issue and the "work-around" of disabling the service fails to disable the service: https://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?t=151731
