In this post I’m going to tell you about how to display live photo well in QuMagie on QNAP. Related error: “[Multimedia Console] Failed to generate thumbnail for *.mov/*.mp4/*.HEIC.”

Problem
As we all know, H.265 Video clip and HEIF image of Live Photo captured by iOS cannot be displayed as thumbnails and played back in the QuMagie.
You can upload the iOS live photo with QFile and set to convert HEIF to JPG. After the iOS live photos are uploaded to the NAS, they will only be displayed in the form of the image and the video clip still couldn’t be played and was displayed as the default thumbnail icon.
Solution
The full name of CAYIN is CAYIN MediaSign Player, which is contains Basic and Plus plan. It can improve the multimedia playback capability of QNAP NAS, support mainstream multimedia formats and new-generation standard HEIF/HEVC (H.265) format pictures and videos. This has greatly enhances the support of QNAP NAS multimedia formats, allowing you to convert multimedia files on the NAS to MP4 (H.264) format for playback through CAYIN MediaSign Player/QuMagie/File Station and etc.
Step 1. Purchase Plus plan
First search in “App Center” and download CAYIN MediaSign Player. Click on the “purchase license” in the software, and then jump to QNAP’s own software store. At the same time, you need to login your own QNAP ID first and buy the license. When your finish purchasing the license, the license will automatically imported to your NAS. DON’T CLOSE THE WINDOW before the importing procedure is over.
Step 2. Import license
After the auto-import was finished, you can find your license already exists in License Center App. If not, click “+Activate License” manually and after login with your QNAP ID, the system will automatically identify the purchase records under the QNAP ID, and click Next to activate.
Step 3. Generate thumbnail
After the purchase, the system will start to generate thumbnails for H.265 videos and HEIF images. Please wait until all the thumbnails are generated.
Step 4. Check CAYIN MediaSign Player
Now your CAYIN MediaSign Player will display “plus” icon which indicate that you have already finished the purchase process. The CAYIN MediaSign Player is basically a media player just as Video Station. Now the H.265 encoded video can display the thumbnail, and can be click to play directly.
Step 5. Check QuMagie
Before the Plus plan was purchased, the Live Photo image from iOS was displayed with a image and a non-playable video clip with no thumbnail.
After purchased, the Live Photo can now be played back successfully. And you can find a “Live” icon displayed on the Live photo image. When you click the icon, the video clip will play back successfully.
